The Colt Industries M4 carbine, a derivative of the famous M16. The M4 & M16 in 5.56 calibre are standard issue to US forces, where they have earned an enviable reputation for reliability in the most unfavourable conditions. They are used by the SAS in preference to the UKs somewhat less reliable SA80.

The German Heckler & Koch MP5 is arguably the best sub-machine gun ever made: it is certainly the most popular worldwide. Firing from a closed bolt position it has great first shot accuracy and well proven reliability. Available in many guises and several calibres, it is most often found in 9mm. The photograph shows the typical retractable stock, the three positional safety lever and the Surefire torch mounted under the barrel. The distinctive sling is an SAS speciality and is one of the few times the Regiment ever uses a sling.

The Austrian Glock pistols have found great success with police forces around the world, but rather less with special forces teams who are cautious about the Glock’s lack of an engageable safety catch. While this is fine for police work it makes drawing a concealed pistol a potentially hazardous operation. Team Frontier uses the Glock 19, the more popular (with special forces) Heckler & Koch USP and the Sig P226.
